My social anxiety started when I was little being a bit shy, when it really developed was by the age of 12 at senior school. It seemed to get worse as I got older (in my twenties now) I found it really hard to go anywhere where there was alot of people, especially for me - family gatherings. I avoided most social interactions, and when I did feel brave enough, I always struggled.
I would worry about anything weeks before and then on the actual day I would get panicky, my heart would race and I would feel dreadful.
I try and stay positive whenever I can and If I do need to do something socially I take small steps and try not to think about it by distracting myself, listening to music, singing, chatting to someone, walking outside, anything that takes my mind off the social interaction. When it is time for me to go, I do breathing exercises and tell myself "I can do this" and "what's the worst that can happen".
After I have socialised I push myself to not analyze anything! I try to stop myself going over it in my mind and then try and distract myself again - it does work if you stick to it.
I have just signed up to the Social Anxiety Course on this site, so I am hoping that it will help me to address social phobia once and for all and help me to cope better in the future in social circumstances. I am hopeful and looking forward to emerging as a better me!
